Assembly Line of Friends

January 17, 2008 by evelyn

While the phrase “assembly line” may sound cold and predictable, that’s the opposite of the warm feeling for the assembly line day of lasagna making I did with friends Evelyn and Kathy.

We made 10 lasagnas in about two hours together. Kathy suggested we invite our husbands and kids to join us in one of our dishes that evening, creating a fun impromptu dinner party at our house when we added a salad and a couple bottles of wine. And along the way that day, the three of us talked and talked as we chopped and stirred. The kitchen buzzed that day, the way kitchens used to so long ago.

First, we decided I’d make a huge batch of basil marinara sauce ahead of time. Kathy was in charge of bringing ground sausage, and Evelyn the noodles and cheeses. We set out 10 pans and made a system of layers””sauce, noodles, cheese, sauce, noodles, cheese. Half were meat and half vegetarian, with spinach. We packaged the lasagnas all up and everyone had a plan””some went in the freezer, others to friends in need.

Since then, we’ve pulled out the lasagnas for dinner guests, last-minute family meals, gifts to friends and even brought one on a vacation. Check out our recipe section for details on the lasagna ingredients and the marinara sauce. There is nothing in your kitchen so wonderful as a true friend.

How fun to see our lasagne-making on this blog! It was a really fun afternoon and evening and so wonderful to have all that food in the freezer. I would just like everyone to know that Shannon’s marinara sauce (recipe is on this site) was the best I’ve ever had and made the lasagnes taste incredibly gourmet.

About Alison J. Bermack

It all began when I was a child cooking with my dad, the kitchen a magnet for cooking and camaraderie, a refuge from adolescence. I spent countless hours chopping, sautéing and simmering my way through childhood. And now, with three kids of my own, I’m still chopping, but this time through their childhood and often with friends.
