Helping Hungry Kids

August 6, 2009 by evelyn

I can’t think of anything sadder than a hungry kid. One of the issues I care about most is improving the quality of food in public schools, not just for my own kids, but for those who might have it as the only meal of their day. More than 12 million children in the United States are growing up hungry, which affects their immune systems, behavior and development, according to the nonprofit Feeding America. As the economic situation in our country has worsened over the past year, more children are suffering.

Today I applaud two companies for phenomenal work in trying to feed our children. ShopRite Partners in Caring, launched ten years ago, has donated $2 million annually to local food banks, $20 million to date. One of their top supporters in the program is General Mills, the famous maker of Cheerios among many other foods. As you know from Alison’s blog (and thank you so much for all of the comments) ShopRite asked us to partner with them to help spread the word. Please, please go to www.shopritepartnersincaring.org to see how you can help. It can be as easy as choosing a certain brand at your ShopRite that will give a donation to the program. Each of us can make a small difference in fighting childhood hunger.

About Alison J. Bermack

It all began when I was a child cooking with my dad, the kitchen a magnet for cooking and camaraderie, a refuge from adolescence. I spent countless hours chopping, sautéing and simmering my way through childhood. And now, with three kids of my own, I’m still chopping, but this time through their childhood and often with friends.
