Sweet Slow Summer

June 18, 2010 by evelyn

“Mom, can we make cookies?” I have to admit, my first reaction a week after school was out was to list all the things we had to do, before bathtime and booktime and bedtime. But after my younger daughter got a gift of some cool new cookie cutters, one in the shape of a party dress, I had no reason to say no. Slowing down in the summer as much as we can, and doing things on the spur of the moment are what makes the best of kids’ summer memories.

So we made a huge, happy mess of the kitchen, flour, sugar and batter everywhere, late in the afternoon. We found little candies to make colorful buttons for the dresses. Great timing for the next day’s planned afternoon activity, a tea party for four girls in the playhouse. Ah, summer. And the sweetest part was the girls saying thank you, thank you, for both wonderful days.
